How to use a drill

The drill has acquired a modern look in the middle of the second decade of the last century, when two mechanics from Maryland, USA, decided to give it the appearance of a pistol with a trigger button instead of a trigger. Today, this tool occupies a leading place in any construction, a wide variety of attachments make it versatile and indispensable. But until now, many users are not aware of how to properly use a drill - this article will help find the answer.

 Drill

Purpose of use

The main purpose of any drill is to drill holes in various materials, so all the calculations of the developers of new models of this practical tool are aimed at improving the quality of drilling. The tool has several speedsIt uses a gearbox that connects the electric motor with the working shaft. How the gearbox works: by changing the gear ratio of the gearbox, we increase or decrease the speed of rotation of the cutting tool.

Modern drills have in their assets 2 modes of operation.

  1. Simple drilling used when working with wood, tile.
  2. Punching it is used when drilling especially durable materials: walls made of stone or brick, concrete structures, thick metal.

For such drilling, special drills are used, which have solderings from hard alloys at the end. To make the drilling process faster, a force of up to 15 kg should be applied to the tool body.

Simple drills mechanics STO quite often used for high-quality car polishing or after painting the car to paint looked spectacular. Drill polishing of various surfaces is also performed during home repairs.

Preparation for operation

Experts state the readiness of the instrument for further work on the following grounds

  • the product is plugged in - this applies to the drill, which operates from the electrical network;
  • the battery is charged and inserted into the bottom of the device - this applies to a standalone tool with batteries;
  • in the cartridge installed the desired nozzle.

Important! To make the drilling smooth and the edges smooth, the cutting surface must be ground on sandpaper before working.

Then, it is necessary to insert the drill in the drill correctly - many users do not know some nuances. The hole where the drill is inserted has a depth of only 2 cm, and in order for the drill to rotate smoothly and without a beat, it must be accurately fixed. Clamping mechanisms There are two types of this tool:

  • manual, when the tightening is carried out manually;
  • mechanical - fixation of the jaws of the cartridge occurs with a special key.

Initial drill installation carried out in stages.

  1. Rotate the chuck until the jaws disperse a little more than the diameter of the inserted or replaced drill.
  2. Install the drill bit in the hole formed until it stops.
  3. Smoothly tighten the chuck and make sure that the drill shank is clamped evenly.
  4. Then tighten the cartridge by hand or key.

When manually tightening, remember that after work, the drill will have to be pulled out of the chuck, so you should not make excessive efforts.

Replacement drill

To change the drill in the drill, you must first completely stop the chuck. You should not brake it with your hands - you risk getting a temperature injury. To properly pull the drill out of the drill, you need to perform a few simple steps, strictly observing the sequence. If you have a drill with keyless chuck, you must follow the following method.

  1. Remove your finger from the start button.
  2. After the rotor stops, clamp the lower part of the cartridge with your left hand, and rotate the upper part counterclockwise with your right hand.
  3. As a result of your actions, the mechanism cams will disperse and you can remove the drill.

When tool with mechanical tightening of the cartridge, then perform the following actions:

  • insert key;
  • rotate it to loosen the jaw clamp;
  • Next, unscrew the chuck by hand and remove the drill bit.

So that the key is always near the drill and not lost - fasten it on a special carabiner to the power cord, as shown in the photo.

 The key is attached to the unit cord

Operating rules

Drill is a very powerful tools and is considered a source of danger, therefore, in its operation it is necessary to follow simple rules.

  1. The blank in which you decided to drill a hole is necessary hold in a vice. Do not try to hold it with your hands - you can get hurt.
  2. Hold the cutting tool or tooling firmly in the chuck, check how it is held before turning on the tool.
  3. When working with particularly hard materials, the drill must be held with both hands and carry constant pressure to increase the effect of drilling.
  4. Pressure must be done without fanaticism, so that the working tool does not jam in the hole, especially when you drill holes of large diameter. The pressure must be reduced when the cutting tool comes out from the back of the workpiece.
  5. Sure to wear gloves and glasses.
  6. Switching modes of operation and replacement of nozzles should be carried out only after complete cessation of rotation.
  7. Remove metal shavings and other drilling waste with a brush.

Drill various holes

Sometimes during repair there is a need to drill holes at different angles and in different planes; this can be done in such ways.

Vertical and horizontal planes:

  • pre-mark the place of drilling;
  • fasten a drill in the product chuck;
  • bring the drill to the place of drilling;
  • gently press the button and gently press on the device;
  • make sure that the drill is in the required plane, then continue drilling;
  • pull out the drill without turning off the tool;
  • wait for the rotating chuck to stop;
  • put the drill aside.

When you need to drill perpendicular hole drill, and the angle of 90 degrees should be perfect, then you should use a special clamp. The tool is fixed strictly vertically - this is suitable for beginners. For the experienced home craftsmen, the original way will do:

  • we put an old compact disk in place of drilling;
  • the cutting tool is aligned so that its visible part coincides with the reflection in the mirror surface of the disk;
  • drill a hole that will be perpendicular without any goniometers.

 Perpendicular drilling

When you need to drill an exact hole at an angle, you can use the stand of the original design shown in the photo below.To use it is elementary: twist the latches at the right angle, insert the drill and drill any holes.

Drilling different materials

To drill fast and efficiently metal surface, it is necessary to choose the right drill - sharpening the cutting edge is significantly different, as well as the steel grade of which the cutting tool is made. During the work it is necessary to establish low turns, and pressure should be strong, but such that the drill does not break. The location of the proposed drilling is marked by a plumbing core. It is necessary to make a small recess so that the drill is firmly hooked on the metal and does not “walk” over its surface.

When drilling concrete or brick, you need to turn on the shock mode and be sure to use a respirator, because there will be a lot of dust.

In order to drill a tileSome masters use a thin wooden plank. We mark the place of the hole on the tile, then we put a wooden lining and carefully drill it so that the soft surface does not crack. With this method you can drill tiles in the bathroom or in the kitchen, and set the maximum speed on the drill.

When you need to make big holes in the tree, then use drills with a thicker diameter or special nozzles. Some experts use a powerful, but with low revolutions (not more than 600 r / min) drill for tightening screw piles on the plot. The installation is carried out by the method of gradual pressing into the ground with simultaneous screwing up of the pile structure assembled in advance, using special wrenches of different diameters.
