All about choosing oil for chainsaws

The resource of any chainsaw, no doubt, depends on the quality of its maintenance and operation. The most important requirement for this unit is the timely lubrication of all its moving parts. Chainsaw oil is available in different types, namely: motor and chain. The motor is poured into the internal combustion engine, and the chain is intended for the saw chain. We will understand how to choose the right oil for chainsaws.

What parts of chainsaws need oil

If you look at a working chainsaw, then its main moving part is immediately apparent - the saw chain, which slides along the tire during sawing. As the law of friction still exists, both parts gradually wear out. To slow down this process, it is customary to use chain oilspecially designed for lubricating saw chains.

Chainsaws can be equipped with both four-stroke engines and two-stroke engines. In 4-stroke units, the crank group is lubricated with oil in the engine crankcase. Two-stroke engines are slightly different in their design and principle of operation. Gasoline in this type of drive enters directly into the space under the piston, where there is a crank mechanism, which has several bearings and bushings that need lubrication. Therefore, in gasoline is added two-stroke oil Chainsaws, so that when they fall on the rubbing parts of this unit, they lubricate them.

Engine oil selection

Oil intended for a 2-stroke engine must meet the following requirements.

  1. Lubrication should form when burned. minimum ash. Ideally, it should burn completely.
  2. The lubricant should have good solubility in gasoline and a high degree of purification from various impurities that can clog very narrow carburetor channels.
  3. The oil must have high anti-corrosion, anti-wear and lubricating properties.

There are certain standards for oils intended for 2-stroke engines: TC-W3 and 2Т. Grease appropriate TC-W3 standard, used for water-cooled engines (boat motors, jet skis). 2T oil used as an additive in gasoline for 2-stroke engines having air cooling (benzokosy, mopeds, chainsaws, etc.).

Oils may have a green, red or blue color. This is done to ensure that their presence in gasoline is easily determined.

When using poor-quality lubricant, the entire piston group of the engine can fail due to the formation of carbon under the piston rings. As a result, they will not be able to shrink, and scoring will form on the cylinder walls. Also, improper lubrication of bearings of the crank mechanism leads to their overheating and, ultimately, to jamming. Important: use diesel oil to prepare the fuel mixture is prohibited, since it does not correspond to any of the above parameter.

Overview of manufacturers of oils for internal combustion engines

Among the manufacturers that produce the best two-stroke oils, we can confidently name 2 leaders - these are the companies Husqvarna (Husvarna) and Stihl (Calm). The companies produce not only ordinary mineral oils, but also synthetic lubricants designed for 2-stroke engines operating in difficult conditions.

Husqvarna HP

This is a Swedish manufacturer, which includes several well-known brands, including the company Partner (Partner), known for its garden equipment for semi-professional and professional use. Husqvarna produces not only equipment, but also high-quality lubricants used on almost all brands of gas powered tools.

The photo below shows the 2-stroke oil Husqvarna HP, which has in its composition special additives, able to compensate for the poor quality of fuel, which in our country is not uncommon. After all, the octane number of gasoline purchased at a gas station is not always the same as stated.

This grease is green in color and contains semi-synthetic basis. It can be packaged both in a 10-liter container and in a liter. The mixture is diluted in a standard ratio of 1:50 (20 g per 1 liter of gasoline). But when the engine is not yet run-in, or work in the frost is coming, the proportion can be increased to 1:40.

Stihl HP

The lubricant has been specially developed for Stihl engines. She has mineral base, possesses high lubricating and cleansing abilities and can be used at an ambient temperature not lower than -10 ° C.

 Stihl HP

The bottle has a special dispenser that allows the process of mixing the fuel mixture without the use of additional measuring containers.

The grease has a red color and is stored for no more than 4 years in a closed container. The latter may have a different capacity, both large and small (for a single refill). For example, there is a 20 gram package sold, the contents of which are added to 1 liter of gasoline. This is a very convenient option for chainsaw owners who use them occasionally. Important: a mixture of gasoline with this oil can not be stored for more than 1 month, because during this time it will already lose its lubricating properties.

Stihl HP Ultra

Oil belongs to the highest category. It was created on fully synthetic based, has green color and possesses the high greasing properties, and thanks to besolny additives it does not create a deposit.

 Stihl HP Ultra

The oil was specially developed for lubrication of engines operating for a long time at high loads and low ambient temperatures, up to -25 ° C. In addition, this lubricant does not harm the environment. If it is spilled on the ground, it will decompose by 80% in 21 days. Packed in lubricant in bottles of 100 ml and 1 liter.

How to determine the ratio of gasoline and oil

The fuel mixture used in 2-stroke engines, is prepared from a certain amount of oil and gasoline. The latter must have an octane number of at least 90 and be unleaded. Best suited for this purpose fuel brand AI-92.

Gasoline having an octane rating of 95 is not recommended because it contains many different additives that harm two-stroke engines.

To prepare the mixture, it is necessary to use only engine oil from reputable manufacturers. The lubricant should be designed for high-speed engines having an air cooling system. This component, designed for low-speed engines (moped, motorcycle, snowmobile), is prohibited.

When preparing the mixture, you must strictly observe the proportion of gasoline and oil.As a rule, it is 1:50, that is, you need to take 100 ml of oil and dilute it in 5 liters of gasoline. This rule changes slightly if the engine or piston system is new, and running in required. In this case, the ratio of oil-gasoline may be 1:40. For running in you will need 2-3 full refueling of the unit with a fuel mixture with this ratio. If you dilute the fuel mixture in the ratio of 1:30, then a deposit on the piston and inside the cylinder is inevitably formed, which, as already mentioned, leads to the breakdown of the entire crank mechanism.

Below is a table that helps to quickly determine the ratio of gasoline-oil, if you want to prepare a large amount of the fuel mixture.

Fuel Mixing Rules

It is necessary to dilute gasoline with oil in tanks, resistant to the effects of petroleum products (canisters of plastic or metal). It is not recommended to use plastic bottles from under water, juice or milk for these purposes, as food grade plastic decomposes under the influence of gasoline. Due to this process, the fuel mixture will change its properties, and it is difficult to predict what effect it will have on the engine.

The combustible mixture for chainsaws is easy to prepare.

  1. Take the required amount of lubricant and pour it into the prepared container. Pouring into the container with oil all the prepared gasoline should not be enough and half the required amount.
  2. Slightly shaking the container, wait until the lubricant is completely dissolved in gasoline.
  3. Now you can pour the remaining gasoline, mixing it well with the mixture in the tank. In this preparation of the fuel mixture for chainsaw ends.

Before each refueling of the chainsaw, it is necessary to shake up the combustible mixture. Also do not forget to tighten the fuel tank cap well, otherwise it will lead to the depletion of the mixture and engine failure.

Ready fuel mixture better immediately use. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare it in such quantity that it is enough for the intended amount of work. If, however, the mixture remains, then it cannot be stored for more than 1-1.5 months. During this time, it will lose a significant part of its lubricating properties.

Selection of oil for chain lubrication

After each filling the chainsaw with the fuel mixture, do not forget to check the amount of oil in the oil tank.In a chainsaw, the oil pump delivers lubricant to the tire over which the saw chain slides. Normally, refueling of both tanks - fuel and oil - should be carried out simultaneously. Oil for lubrication of the chain should be poured into the appropriate tank to the neck. Otherwise it may run out before the fuel, which will lead to overheating of the chain and the tire.

Chainsaw chain lubricant must be developed specifically for this purpose. The use of other lubricants is inefficient and reduces the service life of not only the saw, but also the tire of the unit. This is explained by the fact that chain oil contains adhesive additives, thanks to which the lubricant literally “sticks” to the chain. This property of oil reduces its consumption, resulting in improved lubrication of the tire chainsaw and the saw chain, increasing their service life.

Also an important parameter of chain lubrication is its density. If you intend to use a lubricant that is not intended for chainsaws, you may notice that oil is leaking during operation of the unit or after it stops. This fact suggests that the lubricant is too liquid. In addition, the liquid lubricant will quickly fly apart in all directions and, accordingly, will end quickly.

 Chainsaw Fuel

When operating the chainsaw in winter, it is necessary to use oil designed for low temperatures to lubricate the chain, otherwise the oil pump will fail. Therefore, the lubricant remaining in the tank needs to be replaced with a low-temperature one.

Leading manufacturers of benzoinstrumenat, such as Stiel, Huskvarna, Makita, Bosh and manufacturer of accessories for chainsaws Oregon, recommend the use of special high adhesive oilsincluding biodegradable. But oils of famous brands have a single drawback - the price is 300 rubles per liter and above. In addition, the lubricant in the tank with time may thicken and clog the channels. For this reason, it has to be drained, and this already increases the flow. But despite this, we have to admit the fact that only the use of special lubricants can prolong the life of the chainsaw.

Recommendations for choosing oil

What oil is better for chainsaws, there is no definite answer, because the market is oversaturated with lubricants for 2-stroke engines. But, in the opinion of masters with experience, it is still better to trust lubricants from well-known manufacturers, such as: Oregon, Stiel, Champion, Huskvarna. Buying oils of these brands, you can extend the life of your tool and provide maximum engine protection.

It should be noted that there are fakes for well-known brands on sale; having bought them, you can ruin your chainsaw. Therefore, lubricants should be purchased only from authorized dealers who have certificates for products.

Chainsaw Chain LubricantAccording to some users, it is possible to replace with any mineral oil with a viscosity of 15-40 for the summer period and with an index of 10-30 for the cold season. The brand can be M8 or M10. Also, many chainsaw owners are starting to wonder if replace 2 stroke oil. Experienced masters do not advise to add other lubricants to gasoline, because you can completely disable the engine of the unit, the repair of which will take as much money as you do not save on lubrication. Moreover, if you count, then one liter of oil will be enough to make 50 liters of the fuel mixture, which can be consumed only by working at the logging site.
