Robots cockroaches penetrate the engines of aircraft

Rolls-Royce UK engineering specialists have created unusual small robots designed to repair aircraft engines from the inside. The novelty was presented at an international event demonstrating advances in aviation in Farnborough.

The robot is based on the behavioral characteristics of cockroaches, the design is designed taking into account the forms and varieties of insects. The device is able to facilitate the procedure of repairing the engine and significantly optimize it. Engineers will simply observe the processes occurring in the engine, and guide the cockroaches, some of the work of robots will be able to perform at all independently.

A camera will be installed in each bot, it will allow to evaluate the front of the upcoming work and the serviceability of the engine without disassembling it. This can shorten the time spent on repairs by dozens of times.

Created models now allow optimizing aircraft maintenance, but as long as their size does not allow to penetrate into the depths of the motor. In the next two to three years, Rolls-Royce engineers intend to reduce cockroaches to 1.5 cm. If this happens, new robots will soon become in demand not only in the aircraft industry, but also in many other sectors of the economy.
