Google's smart glasses will help children with autism

Experts have found an interesting way to use "smart glasses" from Google. It turned out that the device is capable of helping children with autism to determine which emotions a person is experiencing during a conversation.

Autism is a complex personality disorder, expressed in a person’s limited ability to establish and maintain social contacts. With the help of Google Glass glasses, autistic children will be able to better navigate in various life situations. The software operating in the glasses system is equipped with facial recognition technology, which helps the child to see the nature of the emotions of a nearby person. So, the device is configured to identify anger, joy, sadness, and some other states.

 Google Glass for autistic children

A study on the effectiveness of using Google-glasses was conducted by experts at Stanford University, the project leader is Jena Daniels. In the course of the study, the families of sick children were asked to use the google-glasses-recognition system in the home environment. Almost 90% of the subjects noted that therapy significantly affected eye contact with children, which became more persistent and prolonged. Since the study did not include a control group intended for a more accurate assessment of the positive dynamics, the conducted experiments were more of an introductory nature. It is possible that in the future the tests will be repeated, and their results will become a point of reference in the large-scale application of the new technology.

Jena Daniels notes that the main goal pursued by specialists is to help children adapt to the social environment at a young age. This will help them to less painfully integrate into the surrounding reality after several years, when contacts with society will become an inevitable reality.
